How Fosteum PLUS Works

Fosteum PLUS is the only product available clinically proven to manage bone loss that offers calcium, phosphate and MK-7 in a single capsule along with genistein, citrated zinc bisglycinate and vitamin D3. Each ingredient is chosen for its specific action in helping to build bone. The reasons:

  • Calcium – a mineral that is absolutely necessary in the diet, but most women between the ages of 40 and 70 miss the recommended daily intake (RDI) by a little. The latest research shows that too much calcium can cause problems by putting calcium into arteries and that can lead to heart problems. So the bottom line is you want calcium but not too much.
  • How Fosteum PLUS Works
  • Phosphate - Proper bone remodeling requires both calcium and phosphate in the diet. Too little phosphate, even if you take in enough calcium, has been shown to decrease bone formation activity and increase bone breakdown activity leading to loss of bone mineral density (BMD). New bone mineralization uses calcium and phosphate at a molar ratio of 1.6 calcium molecules for every phosphate molecule.. FOSTEUM PLUS contains the correct molar ratio of calcium to phosphate that approximates this number.
  • Genistein - The genistein in FOSTEUM PLUS decreases the number of mature cells that break down bone and increases to number of cells that build up bone. The overall effect is an increase of bone formation that restores bone remodeling toward normal levels and results in an increase in BMD over time. Genistein acts at a number of points in the bone remodeling cycle. If you are interested in the details ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
  • Citrated zinc bisglycinate – this form of zinc was chosen because it is absorbed more easily than other forms of zinc. Zinc has a positive effect on bone formation. Studies have shown that zinc and genistein work synergistically, meaning that together they work more effectively than either zinc or genistein alone.
  • Trans-menaquinone-7 –Vitamin K affects blood coagulation and clotting, but vitamin K2 builds bone and helps to keep calcium out of your arteries. MK-7 is the most effective, longest-lasting form of vitamin K2. It helps to put minerals into bone. Some of the proteins responsible for bone building are vitamin K2 dependent. Without vitamin K2, the proteins are not active, so the minerals do not get put into the bone. One particular type of protein that is activated by vitamin K2 is called Gla. Three Gla proteins have been identified in bone. Gla-osteocalcin (Gla-OC) binds calcium (Ca2+) to be incorporated into hydroxyapatite crystals. Matrix Gla-protein forms a significant part of the structural matrix in bone into which the apatite is incorporated. Protein-S, a protein which is produced by osteoblasts and which is involved in bone remodeling homeostasis, is also vitamin K-dependent. In the absence of adequate vitamin K, much of the OC remains uncarboxylated (un-OC) and Ca2+ binding and deposition in bone is inadequate. Increased serum un-OC has been associated in humans with decreased BMD. Vitamin D3 and menaquinone-7 act synergistically on the molecular level to increase the production of OC.
  • Cholecalciferol, Vitamin D3, is the natural form of the vitamin produced when skin is exposed to the sun. Vitamin D3 assists in the proper absorption of calcium and phosphate from the upper intestine and the use of absorbed minerals in the mineralization of bone. Vitamin D is important for many organs and tissues in the body in addition to bone.

This special combination of ingredients in Fosteum PLUS is designed to work safely to help balance bone turnover by reducing bone breakdown activity and increasing bone building activity. These effects improve bone mineral density over time. Improved bone mineral density is associated with reduced fracture risk.
