Fosteum PLUS

New Prescription Product for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis

Fosteum PLUS: The medical food product Fosteum PLUS™ is a specially formulated prescription medical food product, consisting of a proprietary blend of calcium, phosphoate, genistein (from a fermented non-soy source) with citrated zinc bisglycinate (a special form of zinc that is absorbed more easily), all trans-menaquinone-7 (MK-7), and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Fosteum PLUS is for the clinical dietary management of the metabolic processes associated with osteopenia and osteoporosis. Fosteum PLUS is indicated when a healthy diet and supplements such as calcium and vitamin D are not enough, but taking drugs is not for you.

How Fosteum PLUS Works

How Fosteum PLUS WorksFosteum PLUS is the only product available that is clinically proven to manage bone loss. The ‘PLUS’ in Fosteum PLUS is the addition of calcium, phosphate and MK-7 to give you everything in one capsule. This special combination of ingredients in Fosteum PLUS is designed to work safely to help balance bone turnover by reducing bone breakdown activity and increasing bone building activity. These effects improve bone mineral density over time. Improved bone mineral density is associated with reduced fracture risk.

Fosteum PLUS contains genistein, which is naturally isolated from a fermented non-soy source. Extended studies in menopausal women showed that genistein produces gain in bone density, with no negative effects on the breast or uterus. Studies have also shown that genistein helps to safely re-balance the breakdown and formation activities in bone without the negative effects that may occur with hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Although genistein may be found in soy products, it is not possible to obtain the same level of genistein from soy foods like tofu or soy milk. The genistein in Fosteum PLUS is NOT from soy.

Zinc is a mineral required for bone, muscle and many other functions in the body. Zinc is added to Fosteum PLUS because studies have shown that adding zinc to genistein makes the genistein work even better. The special form of zinc in Fosteum PLUS is easier for the body to absorb than other forms. Zinc has been shown to work synergistically with genistein.

Vitamin D3 is required for strong bones. It helps the body absorb calcium from food or supplements and deposit that calcium in the bone.

MK-7 is also required for strong bone. This type of vitamin K2 is in Fosteum PLUS because it puts calcium in bones and removes it from arteries.

Calcium is necessary for strong bones, but taking too much calcium without vitamin D3 and MK-7 can lead to the calcium being deposited in your arteries instead of your bones. This makes arterial plaque worse and can lead to cardiac problems like heart attack. The amount of calcium in Fosteum PLUS is just enough to bring the average American diet up to the recommended amount of 1000 – 1200 mg per day. (Reference: Bailey RL, et al., Estimation of Total Usual Calcium and Vitamin D Intakes in the United States1–3 J Nutr. 2010 April; 140(4): 817–822). You do not want to take more than that from all sources in your diet and supplements without a specific medical reason.

Phosphate supplies the second most common mineral in bone. To make healthy bone requires about 1.6 molecules of calcium for every 1 molecule of phosphorus. Fosteum PLUS provides just the ratio required to make healthy bone.

Fosteum PLUS also contains, micro-crystaline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and sodium copper chlorophyllin in a gelatin capsule with titanium dioxide as coloring. Fosteum PLUS does not contain fructose, glucose, sucrose, lactose, gluten, maltodextrin, tree nuts, peanuts, flavors or products of animal or seafood origin. Fosteum PLUS is suitable for vegans if the capsule is opened and the contents of the capsule is sprinkled over soft food such as applesauce.
